It was really great to be recognised at the Melbourne Fringe Festival Awards with Aurland: Sounds & Images being judged by a panel of artists as the winner in the Category Award Best Music.
The Melbourne Fringe Festival Show featured two pieces inspired by a shipwreck in 1743. After reading about this story I was inspired to write two songs. White Sea Port Part I was written from the sailor's perspective who was shipwrecked for 6 years, and White Sea Port Part II was written from the perspective of the sailor's wife who went down to meet every ship that came into the White Sea Port. She never gave up believing that he would return home and after 6 years he finally returned.

Aurland is a beautiful town in Norway with stunning fjords. This beautiful setting was the inspiration for the project that I've been involved in for three years now, melding image and sound.
Aurland's first show was at the Toff in Town in June 2009. This short set was based on Australian seascapes. The performance featured myself on double bass and Matt Kenneally playing guitar and vocals. This show combined natural images with acoustic instruments.
In September 2009 Aurland: Sounds & Images performed three shows at the Melbourne Fringe Festival. In addition to natural images of seascapes and folk style songs, the Melbourne Fringe Festival show introduced more abstract images and electronic samples that I had composed in Ableton Live. The line-up was Matt Kenneally on guitar and vocals, Sean Loughran on percussion, and myself on double bass and vocals.
